Abstract

The objective of COSMO is to examine the contribution and impact of temporary architectures realised with self-construction practices in the context of the search for the 'sustainability' of common goods. In order to achieve this aim, COSMO has identified four main objectives: to define a taxonomy of contemporary architectural practices related to the project theme; to identify and analyse significant case studies; to define guidelines to support public administrations and/or third sector agencies; and to create a "kit" of design and implementation tools for innovative self-construction methodologies. The COSMO project aims to gain an understanding of the processes of re-appropriation of architectural and urban space from a perspective that is characterised by a bottom-up approach. This approach is particularly relevant in contexts where urban areas are undergoing significant transformation, and where the communities that inhabit these areas are themselves engaged in practices that shape the urban environment.

In order to gain a nuanced understanding of the complex spatial realities that emerge in such contexts, COSMO will employ a combination of study methods that take into account both quantitative and qualitative aspects.

The activities of the UniBS Research Unit are as follows:

The University of Brescia is involved in the project and will assist the University of Pavia in the following phases: analysis of the state-of-the-art on the main topics of study and development of a taxonomy of emblematic cases of temporary, self-built architecture realised through participatory processes. The aim is to identify recurring “good practices” for a critical review of sustainability in the design and realisation of “Common Goods”, in this case public and collective spaces. At the end of this collaborative phase, the University of Brescia will select a site for the development of a pilot project in an urban area undergoing significant redevelopment, where the selected good practices will be tested and adapted to the specific context.

For the University of Brescia, the development of a pilot project for the application of architecture is a fundamental step: through an inductive methodological approach, in collaboration with the University of Pavia, it will be possible to hypothesise operational project tools to be made available to Public Bodies and the Third Sector. These tools will be useful for the development of actions aimed at the re-appropriation of marginal or abandoned urban spaces. In addition, the design of a tangible physical model represents the concrete output of the speculative investigations carried out through the study of the state of the art; this approach provides a pragmatic tool for organising and presenting the guidelines and tools that the research project tends towards, to be developed in synergy with the methodological approach of the University of Pavia.

The COSMO UniBS Open Access Bibliography

The COSMO UniBS Open Access Bibliography has been developed as a readily accessible resource for the beneficiaries of the COSMO project, as well as for all those with an interest in the architectural design of Urban Commons.

This page is an open document, subject to continuous development and updates. It will continue to be populated with new sources and opportunities for content updates.
