The issues debated within the ISS focus on the principle of “impermanence” of contemporary living and the need to explore the construction potential of housing that can be built and dismantled (disassembled) quickly, at reduced costs, and made as autonomous as possible from the point of view of systems and energy supply and flexible in its use, establishing ever-changing relationships with places. It is also necessary to take into account that experimental artefacts produced by the avant-garde, since the first decades of the twentieth century, are now largely feasible thanks to the advancement and innovations of technology. The ISS will work on the potential of a prefabricated housing prototype. The model, at a scale of 1:1, is the starting point for the design operations to be carried out during the intensive workshop. Further checks will also take place through the use of advanced digital prototypes for production control and for the improvement of the housing system as a whole.

The overall meaning of the ISS focuses on the profound questioning of the notion of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, since the return of popularity of the Off Site as well as of Modularity, enabled by digitalization, hides the pitfalls of a path that has already proved to be unsuccessful. At the same time, the design object is likely to shift to living services, so that real estate assets must be «as-services».

The projects will be developed, in a virtual environment, for different environmental and urban contexts, in order to allow reflections on the applicability of the prototype itself, sustainability (in terms of energy savings and recovery of building materials once the useful life of the object is over), reduction of land consumption (linking temporariness with the natural cycles of ecosystems), urban regeneration (verifying the appropriateness of introducing activators for processes of regeneration of underused or disused urban areas), as protection on the territory of vulnerable or sensitive areas (temporariness as a condition for the maintenance of minimum activities of environmental maintenance).

During the ISS, working groups will be formed composed of students from the University of Brescia and other, architects and experts in the field with a broad disciplinary background able to establish a design process outside the traditional schemes.

A first phase will be dedicated to the study and critical interpretation of the project contexts. There will be some theoretical lessons that will address from various angles the issue of living in contemporary disciplinary debate and the issues related to urban feasibility from the regulatory point of view. The intensive programme, in addition to the ex cathedra lessons, includes project discussions both in the preparation phase and in the final evaluation (Final Jury).

The working groups, supported by academic tutors and qualified experts, will develop and finalize their own original project proposal developed up to the scales of representation deemed as appropriate.

The activation of the ISS is a structured response to the specific needs expressed by both the world of work, professional and construction production, and academia, to implement a path of current development and in line with advanced training objectives and best practices of the best universities working in the field of integrated architectural and urban design.
